Traffic at the Madhya Kailash junction will be diverted for three nights starting Friday to facilitate the installation of a high mast lamp. Diversions will be in effect from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Chennai: Night-Time Traffic Diversions Announced
With the construction of the new flyover at the Madhya Kailash junction nearing completion, authorities have announced night-time traffic diversions for three days beginning Friday. The diversions are required for installing a high mast lamp to improve lighting along Sardar Patel Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai.
The restrictions will be in place between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., as approved by the city traffic police.
Lighting Installation Underway
The Greater Chennai Corporation will carry out the lighting work on behalf of the Highways Department. An allocation of ₹85 lakh has been made for installing 35 light poles and the high mast lamp.
Work to install lamp posts and lay power lines has already begun near VHS Hospital.
Flyover Work 90% Complete
The Highways Department, which is constructing the L-shaped flyover at a cost of ₹60.68 crore, reported:
- 90% of construction completed
- 19 spans of the 652-metre structure finished
- Structural completion expected in two weeks
After this, additional works such as painting, signages, and lighting will be completed. Crash barriers are currently being installed along the Sardar Patel Road approach, while the IT Highway approach is nearing completion.
Road Condition Concerns
Commuters have expressed concerns about the poor road condition near the IIT-Madras stretch. The Highways Department noted that the road frequently sinks due to old sewer lines and manholes belonging to the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. They cautioned that the issue will persist unless these underground utilities are repaired.
