Meta has introduced a new feature that allows WhatsApp users in India to pay essential utility bills directly through the app. Users can now pay bills for electricity, cooking gas, drinking water and other essential services through WhatsApp.

The service is being provided through the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) network. With this facility, users can make payments to around 22,722 service providers across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loan instalments.

Through Bharat Connect, WhatsApp users can access and pay bills for electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loans without leaving the app. The service covers 22,722 billers across 30 categories.

Payments can be made using UPI, credit cards and debit cards. Users can also view their previous and upcoming bills through the app.

To access the feature, users can tap the rupee symbol at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. The new facility will be gradually rolled out to Android and iOS users in the coming weeks, according to WhatsApp.
