Passengers at Chennai Airport are facing a sudden surge in domestic flight fares, causing concern among travelers.

As per the latest update, ticket prices across several routes have increased significantly following a rise in global crude oil prices due to ongoing tensions in Central Asia. The increase in aviation fuel costs, along with the removal of the fare cap by the Union Government, has allowed airlines to revise ticket prices upward.

On the Chennai–Thoothukudi route, fares have risen from ₹3,608 in January to ₹6,503. Similarly, Chennai–Madurai fares have increased from ₹3,129 to ₹5,467, while Chennai–Trichy has gone up from ₹3,608 to ₹4,521. The Chennai–Coimbatore route now stands at ₹4,966, up from ₹4,351.

Fares on major inter-state routes have also seen an increase. Chennai–Delhi tickets have gone up from ₹5,933 to ₹6,496, Chennai–Mumbai from ₹3,356 to ₹4,020, and Chennai–Kolkata from ₹5,293 to ₹6,047.

The fare hike is more noticeable on routes within Tamil Nadu, where flights often operate with lower passenger occupancy. Airlines state that the increase is aimed at offsetting operational losses. In contrast, routes to other states have witnessed only moderate hikes due to higher demand.

Passengers who booked tickets earlier at lower prices are now required to pay the fare difference online before boarding. The sudden hike, which came into effect from April 1, has left many passengers surprised.
