Tamil Nadu Government Issues Guidelines for Schools Ahead of 2026–27 Academic Year Reopening

Directorate of School Education has released detailed guidelines for schools across the state ahead of the reopening of schools for the 2026–27 academic year. The Tamil Nadu government has instructed all state-run schools to complete infrastructure preparations, ensure student safety, and distribute educational materials before classes resume.

The latest school reopening guidelines focus on improving school infrastructure, maintaining hygiene, and ensuring digital learning facilities are fully functional for students.

Tamil Nadu School Reopening Guidelines 2026

The department has directed schools to:

- Ensure classrooms and campus infrastructure are ready
- Maintain hygienic kitchen spaces for mid-day meal preparation
- Secure unsafe structures, damaged buildings, and open wells
- Repair and maintain toilets and drinking water facilities
- Ensure safety around septic tanks, borewells, and electrical lines

Schools have also been instructed to coordinate with electricity authorities to address risks from overhead power lines and unsafe electrical connections.

Smart Boards and Digital Facilities to Be Ready

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has asked schools to ensure that:

- Smart boards are functional
- Computer labs are operational
- Desktops, laptops, and tablets are ready for use
- Internet connectivity is active wherever digital infrastructure exists

The move is aimed at strengthening digital learning facilities in government schools across Tamil Nadu.

Free Textbooks, Uniforms and Notebooks Distribution

The government confirmed that free textbooks, notebooks, and uniforms for the 2026–27 academic year have already been dispatched to districts. Education officials have been instructed to ensure timely distribution to all students before schools reopen.

According to the department:

- Textbooks for Classes 4 to 12 have been fully distributed to districts
- Distribution for Classes 1 to 3 is currently under progress with 48% completed
- Around 94% of total textbooks have been supplied statewide
- Notebook distribution has reached 84% in elementary education
- 92% distribution completed in secondary education
- 77% distribution completed in matriculation schools

The Tamil Nadu government said the measures are aimed at ensuring a smooth and safe reopening of schools for lakhs of students across the state.
