Mettur Dam Water Released for Cauvery Delta Irrigation: CM Vijay Opens Sluice Gates

Chief Minister Joseph Vijay today (September 1) released water from the Mettur Dam for irrigation in the Cauvery Delta districts. Water will be released from the Mettur Dam for the next 45 days, starting today.

Ahead of the event, Chief Minister Vijay arrived at Salem Airport from Chennai by a special flight, where he was warmly welcomed by officials and party members. He then travelled by van from Kamalapuram to Mettur by road.

People and party workers gathered along both sides of the road to give the Chief Minister an enthusiastic welcome. On the way, Vijay toured Mecheri and Mettur in an open-top van.

Upon arriving at the Mettur Dam for the water release ceremony, Chief Minister Vijay received a special ceremonial parade from the police. He subsequently released water from the Mettur Dam and welcomed the flowing water by showering flowers into the canal.

The Chief Minister later posed for photographs with farmers and viewed photographs explaining various aspects of the Mettur Dam.

Water Resources Minister N. Anand, along with several other ministers and officials, participated in the event.

Normally, water is released from the Mettur Dam for Cauvery Delta irrigation every year on June 12. However, due to insufficient water availability, the release has been delayed this year.

It is noteworthy that water has been released for irrigation today for the 62nd time with a delay in the 93-year history of the Mettur Dam.
