The proposed Chennai Metro Rail extension from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus is currently under review by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, according to officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).

The project is expected to become a major transportation link for passengers travelling between South Chennai, Chennai International Airport, and the newly operational Kilambakkam Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus.

Chennai Metro Network Continues to Expand

At present, Chennai Metro Rail services are operating across two major corridors under Phase-1:

- Wimco Nagar to Chennai Airport
- Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount

These metro corridors together cover around 54 kilometres across Chennai city.

In addition, Chennai Metro Phase-2 works are currently progressing across 116.1 kilometres under three major corridors, making it one of the largest urban transport infrastructure projects in Tamil Nadu.

Airport–Kilambakkam Metro Extension Project Details

As part of the metro expansion plan, Chennai Metro authorities proposed extending the existing airport metro corridor up to the Kilambakkam New Bus Terminus for a total distance of 15.5 kilometres.

The proposed extension is aimed at improving public transport access to the rapidly developing Kilambakkam bus terminus, which handles long-distance buses travelling to southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Initially, the project faced certain technical and administrative challenges related to:

- Bridge design modifications
- Land allocation and alignment issues

After resolving these concerns, Chennai Metro Rail Limited prepared a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) with minor modifications.

Revised DPR Submitted to Central Government

Following approval from the Tamil Nadu government, the revised project report was submitted to the Central Government in May last year seeking final approval.

However, the Union Government later instructed Chennai Metro authorities to include an Integrated Urban Transport Operational Plan as part of the proposal.

Based on this instruction, CMRL updated the DPR by incorporating a five-year integrated transport operational strategy and resubmitted the proposal in July last year.

Ministry Reviewing Proposal

According to Chennai Metro Rail officials, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is currently reviewing the proposal and consulting with other concerned departments before issuing approval.

Officials stated that continuous efforts are being taken to secure the Central Government’s clearance for the important metro rail extension project.

Major Benefits Expected for Chenennai Commuters

Once approved and implemented, the Chennai Airport–Kilambakkam Metro Rail extension is expected to offer several major benefits, including:

- Faster travel between Chennai Airport and Kilambakkam

- Better connectivity for long-distance bus passengers

- Reduced road traffic congestion in South Chennai

- Improved integration with metro, suburban rail, and bus transport systems

- Enhanced public transport access for rapidly growing suburban areas

The project is also expected to support Chennai’s future urban expansion and strengthen the city’s overall public transportation network.
