Chennai Corporation Cancels Infrastructure Project Tenders Worth ₹600 Crore Amid Financial Constraints

Facing financial pressure and a revenue shortfall, the Greater Chennai Corporation has reportedly cancelled tenders for several new infrastructure projects worth around ₹600 crore, including the proposed Velachery flyover project.

The move comes as part of efforts to streamline expenditure and improve financial planning. Earlier, the Corporation had also cancelled footpath project tenders worth ₹284 crore.

To boost revenue, special tax collection camps are being conducted across zones and wards to collect pending property tax and professional tax dues. Property owners have been urged to clear outstanding taxes to avoid legal action.

According to reports, infrastructure projects worth between ₹600 crore and ₹700 crore are currently under review. The Corporation is also working to settle pending payments to contractors, with outstanding dues estimated at nearly ₹2,000 crore.

Corporation officials said that only large capital-intensive infrastructure projects have been temporarily put on hold. Once the financial situation improves, the projects will be reassessed and fresh tenders will be invited.

However, revenue-generating and public-benefit projects, including multi -level parking facilities, will continue without interruption, officials added.
