Posted on: 20/Feb/2026 11:28:39 AM

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has issued a strict 30-day deadline for registration of Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) in the city. The move is aimed at strengthening solid waste management practices and ensuring large establishments comply with environmental regulations.

Mandatory Registration Within 30 Days

All eligible bulk waste generators must complete registration within 30 days of the notification. Non-compliance may attract penalties under the Solid Waste Management Rules. The civic body is expected to operationalize an online portal to simplify the registration process.

Who Must Register as a Bulk Waste Generator?

The following establishments fall under the BWG category if they generate significant amounts of waste:

- Large apartment complexes and residential communities

- Hotels, restaurants, and banquet halls

- Hospitals and healthcare facilities

- Schools, colleges, and universities

- IT parks and corporate offices

- Shopping malls and commercial complexes

- Industrial units

Buildings generating 100 kg or more of waste per day or meeting specified size and water consumption criteria are required to register.

Responsibilities of Registered BWGs

- Once registered, Bulk Waste Generators must:

- Segregate waste at source into wet and dry categories

- Process organic waste on-site or through authorized agencies

- Ensure responsible disposal and recycling

- Comply with civic waste collection norms

Cleaner Chennai Initiative

The deadline is part of GCC’s broader initiative to reduce landfill dependency, improve recycling rates, and enhance sustainable waste management in Chennai. Authorities have urged all large establishments to register promptly to avoid penalties.
