In TN, additional 15gm dhal to be provided to the students

Now, there would be an increase in the quantity of dhal supplied on a daily basis for the upper primary class students from classes 6 to 8 in TN. The objective of this is to meet the nutritional requirement of the students.

According to S. Madhumathi, secretary of social welfare department, to fulfil the nutritional demands of the students of upper primary classes, 15 gms of dhal would be provided additionally on a daily basis. This would be according to the guidelines issued by the Union government.

In 1982, MGR Nutritious Meal Programme was launched and under this the TN government has been providing free food for the students studying in the government schools. In order to meet the nutritional demands of the students in the lockdown period, dry food grains were distributed.

On a daily basis, nearly 100gms of rice and 40gms of dal have been provided to the primary class students and 150gms of rice and 41gms of dal has been provided to the upper primary class students.

Under the NPMDMS or National Programme of Mid-Day Meals for Schools, the centre recently announced that a student of primary class must be given 450 kilocalories and 12gms of proteins. In the same way, the students of upper primary classes must be given 700 kcal and 20gms of proteins.

There is a deficiency in calories by 50 kilocalories and proteins by 0.8gms in the current nutritional value of food taken by the upper primary class students. Therefore, 15gms of dal has been added daily to meet the nutritional demands.
