Vegetable Prices Rise Again in Tamil Nadu: Small Onions at ₹100 per Kg in Chennai

Vegetable prices have increased sharply across Tamil Nadu, adding to the financial burden on households already struggling with rising essential commodity costs. The latest price hike has caused concern among consumers, particularly as the Deepavali festival approaches.

In Chennai, small onions are selling at around ₹100 per kg in retail markets. In Tirunelveli, the price has reportedly reached ₹168 per kg, surprising consumers. Traders at the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market in Chennai say reduced arrivals are one of the main reasons for the sudden increase in onion prices.

Several other commonly used vegetables have also become more expensive. Beans, which were previously sold at around ₹60 per kg, are now priced between ₹90 and ₹100 per kg. The price of broad beans has doubled from ₹40 to approximately ₹80 per kg.

Green peas are selling at around ₹200 per kg, while lemons have reached ₹250 per kg. These rising prices are affecting household budgets, especially for families that depend on vegetables for their daily cooking.

According to traders, reduced vegetable arrivals due to rainfall and increased demand ahead of Deepavali are contributing to the price rise. The supply shortage has affected the availability of several vegetables in local markets, pushing retail prices higher.

Consumers are concerned that vegetable prices may remain high until the festival. With rice, pulses, cooking oil and other essential commodities also becoming more expensive, managing everyday household expenses has become increasingly difficult for many families.

Traders expect vegetable prices, particularly small onion prices, may decline after Deepavali if fresh arrivals increase and market supply improves. However, actual price movements will depend on weather conditions, supply levels and consumer demand.

Consumers are advised to compare prices across local markets and plan their purchases carefully while vegetable prices remain high.
