Chennai Koyambedu Onion Price Rises to ₹50 Per Kg as Arrivals Decline

Onion prices at Chennai’s Koyambedu wholesale market have increased significantly, rising to ₹50 per kg from ₹30–35 per kg earlier this month. Wholesalers have attributed the price rise to a decline in onion arrivals from major producing states.

Why Have Onion Prices Increased at Koyambedu Market?

Traders said heavy rains in Maharashtra and increased onion exports have affected supplies reaching the Koyambedu wholesale market. Onions supplied to Chennai are mainly sourced from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The reduced supply has put upward pressure on wholesale onion prices in Chennai. If arrivals remain low, retail onion prices could also see further increases in the coming days.

Onion Supply Falls at Koyambedu Market

The daily arrival of onions at Koyambedu Market has dropped considerably. Traders said the market usually receives around 70–80 truckloads of onions per day, but arrivals have now fallen to approximately 50 trucks.

This means daily onion arrivals have declined by around 20–30 truckloads, or roughly 25–38% compared with normal levels.

The lower arrivals, combined with weather-related disruptions and increased exports, have contributed to the recent rise in Chennai onion prices.
