Gold and Silver Prices Decline on First Day of 2026 After Record Highs

Posted on: 01/Jan/2026 10:04:37 AM

Gold and silver prices had witnessed a sharp surge in recent weeks, reaching unprecedented levels. On December 15 last year, the price of gold crossed the ₹1 lakh mark per sovereign for the first time. Although prices dipped slightly thereafter, they rose again after December 22 and continued to remain above ₹1 lakh.

The upward trend continued, and on December 27, gold touched a new all-time high of ₹1,04,800 per sovereign. On the same day, silver also hit a record high of ₹2,85,000 per kilogram. Amid concerns that prices might climb further, the trend reversed, and both gold and silver prices began to decline from December 29.

In this context, on the first day of 2026, gold and silver prices have fallen further. Gold prices dropped by ₹40 per gram and ₹320 per sovereign, with gold now selling at ₹12,440 per gram and ₹99,520 per sovereign.

Silver prices have also moved downward. The price of silver fell by ₹1 per gram and ₹1,000 per kilogram, and is currently selling at ₹256 per gram and ₹2,56,000 per kilogram.

Traders have stated that the current decline in gold and silver prices is only a temporary dip, adding that such fluctuations are expected to continue in the coming days.
