Odisha’s Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the expanded Tata Steel Kalinganagar (TSK) plant on Thursday, marking a major milestone in India’s steel manufacturing sector. The expansion increases the plant’s crude steel production capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA.
The ceremony took place at the Kalinganagar plant in Jajpur district, in the presence of senior government officials, Tata Steel’s top leadership, and members of the local community. Dignitaries present included Shri Pradeep Bal Samanta, Minister for Co-operation, Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts; Shri Sampad Chandra Swain, Minister for Industries, Skill Development & Technical Education; and Dr. Rabindra Narayan Behera, Member of Parliament, Jajpur.
Speaking at the event, CM Shri Mohan Charan Majhi stated, "Today marks a significant milestone in our journey with the Tata Group. The expansion of Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar plant is a symbol of our shared commitment to sustainable growth and nation-building. The Tata Group has consistently set benchmarks in safety, sustainability, and community development."
Tata Steel CEO & MD T. V. Narendran remarked, "Kalinganagar is more than a manufacturing site – it’s a symbol of collaboration between community, industry, and government. This expansion reinforces our long-term commitment to Odisha and our vision for a stronger, self-reliant India."
With an investment exceeding ₹50,000 crore across two phases, the expansion includes the launch of India’s largest blast furnace, boasting a volume of 5,870 m³. This advanced facility is designed for long-term sustainability, featuring four top combustion stoves a first in India and two preheating stoves for fuel-efficient hot metal production.
Phase II of the expansion also includes a Pellet Plant, Coke Plant, and Cold Rolling Mill, each incorporating cutting-edge technologies focused on efficiency and eco-friendly operations.
Tata Steel Kalinganagar stands as one of India’s most modern integrated steel plants, supporting the nation’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission by supplying high-quality steel for sectors including defence, automotive, infrastructure, engineering, and renewable energy.
