Tamil Nadu Pongal Gift 2027: New-Design Free Dhoti and Saree for 2.23 Crore Ration Cardholders

Nearly 2.23 crore ration cardholders across Tamil Nadu are set to receive redesigned and improved-quality free dhotis and sarees as part of the Pongal 2027 gift scheme. The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a major design overhaul to make the garments more attractive, comfortable, and suitable for everyday wear.

The new dhotis and sarees will feature modern gold, silver, or copper-coloured polyester zari borders. Along with the traditional blue, white, pink, and ivory colour combinations, the government will also introduce vibrant green and other brighter shades to offer recipients more appealing choices.

The sarees will be manufactured using an improved polycot yarn with a higher polyester-to-cotton ratio, making the fabric softer, lighter, and more breathable for comfortable wear, especially during the summer months.

Under the Pongal gift scheme, eligible rice-category ration cardholders receive a free dhoti and saree, along with rice, sugarcane, cashew nuts, jaggery, and cash assistance through the Public Distribution System (PDS). The initiative is intended to help economically disadvantaged families celebrate the harvest festival with dignity and joy.

The Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles has been entrusted with procuring the garments for distribution through PDS outlets. The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned ₹300 crore as the first instalment to begin the procurement process.

The scheme will be implemented at a total cost of ₹642.88 crore, covering the production and distribution of 2.27 crore dhotis and sarees. In addition to ration cardholders, senior citizens receiving old-age pensions and other eligible beneficiaries under the state`s social welfare schemes will also receive the garments free of cost.

Officials said the early launch of the procurement process will provide nearly six months of continuous employment for handloom weavers across Tamil Nadu and support the livelihoods of more than five lakh textile workers, while ensuring timely distribution of the Pongal gift package.
