Greater Chennai Corporation Partners with Azad Foundation to Train Women in Commercial Driving

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Azad Foundation to expand mobility opportunities and promote sustainable livelihoods for women across Chennai, particularly those from marginalised socio-economic backgrounds.

The agreement was signed at the Ripon Building in Chennai. Under the initiative, women will receive commercial driving training for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, helping them prepare for professional driving and transport-related jobs.

The programme aims to go beyond skill development by creating safe and dignified employment opportunities for women. It also seeks to address the barriers women face when entering the transport and mobility sectors.

According to the Greater Chennai Corporation, the partnership will be supported by its Gender and Policy Lab. The initiative aims to promote women`s financial independence through professional driving skills while contributing to safer transport options for women travelling across Chennai.

GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran, Azad Foundation executives Dolon Ganguly and Malini Krishnan, and the head of the Gender and Policy Lab, Legis, attended the event.

The partnership is expected to help women gain professional skills, access employment opportunities and participate more actively in the transport sector.
