Chennai Water Metro: 53-Km Ennore to Mamallapuram Route Proposed

Chennai is exploring the possibility of introducing a Water Metro service along the Buckingham Canal, with a proposed 53-km route connecting Ennore and Mamallapuram. The project aims to improve public transport connectivity through waterways and provide commuters with an alternative mode of transportation.

The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) has initiated the process of assessing the feasibility of the proposed Chennai Water Metro project. A tender has been floated to prepare a detailed feasibility study report for the proposed water transport corridor.

The study will examine various aspects of the project, including the feasibility of operating passenger boat services, route requirements, infrastructure, terminals and other facilities needed for the proposed Ennore–Mamallapuram Water Metro.

The 53-km corridor along the Buckingham Canal could connect important locations between Ennore and Mamallapuram. If implemented, the Chennai Water Metro could provide an additional public transport option and help improve connectivity across the city and its surrounding areas.

The proposed water-based transport system could also complement existing modes of public transportation, including Chennai Metro, suburban trains and MTC bus services.

The feasibility study is expected to provide clarity on the technical and operational possibilities of the project. Further decisions regarding the implementation of the Chennai Water Metro will be taken based on the findings of the study.
