Madurai AIIMS OPD Services to Begin on January 1, 2027

The Central Government has informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that the outpatient department (OPD) at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Madurai, is scheduled to become fully operational from January 1, 2027.

The matter came before a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sushrut Aravind Dharmadhikari and Justice CV Karthikeyan, following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Bhaskar of Kamarajar Salai in Madurai.

Madurai AIIMS Construction Progress

In his petition, Bhaskar sought directions to expedite the construction of the AIIMS hospital at Thoppur, Madurai, and complete the project within a stipulated timeframe.

The petitioner pointed out that the Central Government had announced the establishment of AIIMS in Tamil Nadu in 2015. He submitted that construction had not progressed at the expected pace and that the project had remained pending for several years.

During the hearing, counsel for the Central Government informed the court that around 57% of the overall AIIMS Madurai construction work had been completed as of August 31.

AIIMS Madurai MBBS Students Shifted to Campus

The Centre also informed the court that the five batches of MBBS students admitted between 2021 and 2025, who had initially been accommodated temporarily in Ramanathapuram, had now been shifted to the AIIMS Madurai campus.

The Central Government further stated that necessary steps were being taken to ensure that the AIIMS Madurai OPD becomes fully functional from January 1, 2027.

After considering the submissions, the Division Bench disposed of the petition based on the Centre`s assurance regarding the planned commencement of OPD services.
