Chennai Water Supply Update: 55.14% Water Storage Available in 5 Major Reservoirs

The five major reservoirs that serve as the primary drinking water sources for Chennai currently hold 55.14% of their total storage capacity, offering relief amid rising summer temperatures in Tamil Nadu.

According to the latest water storage data, the combined capacity of the five key lakes - Chembarambakkam, Puzhal, Poondi, Cholavaram and Kannankottai - is 11.757 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet). At present, these reservoirs together contain 6.48 TMC of water.

Water resource officials stated that the current storage level is considered stable and sufficient for Chennai’s drinking water requirements in the coming weeks. Recent rainfall in catchment areas and regulated water management have helped maintain adequate storage levels in the reservoirs.

Among the major lakes, Chembarambakkam and Poondi continue to play a crucial role in supplying drinking water to several parts of Chennai and surrounding suburban regions.

The Chennai Metro Water Board is continuously monitoring reservoir levels and water distribution to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply across the city during the summer season.
