Residents living in several interior areas of Tambaram have threatened to stage a road blockade protest on GST Road, alleging that roads damaged during underground electricity cable work have remained unrepaired for over three months.

According to local residents, the dug-up roads have become nearly unusable for autorickshaws, two-wheelers and even bicycles, causing major inconvenience to more than 1,000 households in the locality. People say potholes and uneven roads are creating daily traffic issues and increasing the risk of accidents.

Residents also claimed that app-based taxi services and autorickshaw drivers are refusing rides to the affected streets because of the poor road conditions. Food delivery workers are reportedly struggling to access homes in the area due to damaged internal roads.

Locals alleged that repeated complaints to Tambaram City Municipal Corporation have not resulted in immediate action. Corporation officials reportedly informed residents that the roads were dug up for Electricity Board cable work and advised them to approach the concerned department.

However, Electricity Board officials allegedly stated that the underground cable work was being handled by private contractors and that the department was not directly responsible for restoring the roads.

Frustrated over the delay, residents have now launched a signature campaign and submitted petitions demanding urgent repair work. They warned that if authorities continue to ignore the issue, a major protest and road blockade on GST Road would be organised soon.

Meanwhile, corporation officials clarified that road restoration can only be completed after the trenches settle properly following underground cable installation work. Officials stated that immediate relaying could lead to further sinking and damage to the road surface.
