Chennai Traffic Congestion: Highways Department Plans Bridge Widening and Extension

The Tamil Nadu Highways Department has proposed infrastructure improvements to reduce traffic congestion in Chennai. The plans include widening a bridge connecting the Koyambedu–Thirumangalam area, widening the Basin Bridge over the Buckingham Canal near Chennai Central, and extending the Jeeva Road flyover in Vyasarpadi.

These projects are aimed at improving traffic movement, easing bottlenecks and providing better connectivity for motorists across the city.

Bridge Widening Planned Near Koyambedu and Thirumangalam

As part of its traffic management efforts, the Highways Department is planning to widen a bridge across the Cooum River in the Koyambedu–Thirumangalam area.

The proposed improvement is expected to help ease congestion along this busy stretch and improve connectivity for commuters travelling through the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Basin Bridge Near Chennai Central to Be Widened

The department is also planning to widen Basin Bridge over the Buckingham Canal near Chennai Central railway station.

The proposed work is intended to improve road capacity and facilitate smoother movement for vehicles in the area, which experiences considerable traffic due to railway and road connectivity.

Jeeva Road Flyover Extension in Vyasarpadi

Another proposed project involves extending the Jeeva Road flyover in Vyasarpadi.

According to the information reported, a tender has been called to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed extension, with an estimated value of ₹19.10 lakh.

The DPR will help assess the project`s requirements and provide a basis for further planning.

Chennai Infrastructure Development

The proposed bridge widening and flyover extension projects form part of broader efforts to address Chennai`s traffic congestion through road infrastructure improvements.

Once the proposals progress through the planning and approval stages, the projects could help improve traffic flow and connectivity in the affected areas.

Further details regarding project timelines and construction schedules are awaited.
