Chennai Metro: CMRL Signs ₹35.97 Crore Agreement to Enhance Phase 1 Network Capacity

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has signed a ₹35.97 crore agreement to enhance the operational capacity of its existing Phase 1 Metro network, aimed at meeting the city’s growing passenger demand.

The contract has been awarded to AECOM India Private Limited, in a joint venture with NIPPON KOEI India, to provide Project Management Consultancy (PMC) services for the capacity enhancement project.

The initiative will focus on upgrading Metro systems, infrastructure and rolling stock across the existing Phase 1 network. The project aims to accommodate rising ridership while ensuring safe, reliable and uninterrupted Metro services.

The PMC scope includes detailed design preparation for civil, track, electrical and mechanical works, along with basic designs for various system packages. It will also cover bid document preparation, tender assistance, construction supervision, project management and technical support.

The project is expected to strengthen Chennai Metro infrastructure and improve the network’s capacity to handle the city’s increasing public transport demand.
