Chennai to Get EV Charging Stations in Anna Nagar, T. Nagar and More Areas
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in several key neighbourhoods, including Anna Nagar, T. Nagar, Nungambakkam, Adyar and Besant Nagar, to strengthen the city’s charging infrastructure.
Each location will have two charging points, allowing motorists to charge their vehicles while using nearby parking facilities. The move aims to support the growing number of EV users in Chennai, including private vehicle owners and those in app-based taxi, logistics and delivery services.
The proposal was earlier raised by Ward 104 councillor T.V. Shemmozhi, highlighting the difficulties many EV users face in finding charging facilities. Following this, Mayor R. Priya announced plans to set up charging stations at more than 15 locations across the city.
Officials said the charging stations will be developed along with parking spaces under a revamped Smart Parking Management System through a public-private partnership. Work on the project is expected to begin by the end of the year as part of Chennai’s efforts to promote cleaner transportation.
