Chennai Metro Records 4.71 Crore Passenger Journeys in First Five Months of 2026
Chennai Metro Rail continues to witness strong passenger growth, with a total of 4.71 crore passenger journeys recorded between January and May 2026. The figures highlight the increasing preference for metro travel among commuters in Chennai due to its convenience, speed, and eco-friendly transportation system.
According to Chennai Metro Rail officials, ridership reached 93.28 lakh passengers in January, 96.40 lakh in February, and crossed the one-crore mark in March with 1.01 crore passengers. Passenger numbers remained strong in the following months, with 90.18 lakh journeys in April and 90.14 lakh in May.
Officials attribute the steady rise in metro ridership to improved connectivity, reduced travel time, and attractive fare benefits offered through the Singara Chennai Card. The smart travel card has gained significant popularity among regular commuters across the city.
Data released by Chennai Metro Rail shows that Singara Chennai Card users accounted for 2.30 crore passenger journeys during the first five months of 2026. The card recorded 46.52 lakh trips in January, 49.11 lakh in February, 52.90 lakh in March, 45.18 lakh in April, and 42.51 lakh in May.
The latest Chennai Metro passenger statistics underline the growing role of metro rail in easing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable urban transportation in the city.
