The Southern Railway has announced a major upgrade for the busy Tambaram Railway Station, aiming to improve passenger convenience and modernize infrastructure.

The project, expected to be completed within 12 months, includes extensive civil works and a new digital passenger information system.

Key Highlights of the Upgrade

The redevelopment has been divided into two parts:

- ₹126.46 crore for civil works
- ₹2.51 crore for digital passenger systems

Infrastructure Improvements

The station’s internal road network will be rebuilt across 11,000 sq.m at a cost of ₹2.88 crore. Circulating areas on both east and west sides will also be upgraded to reduce congestion during peak hours.

Platform and Roofing Works

Platforms 5 and 6 will get new shelters. Around 9,500 sq.m of roofing sheets and 1,800 sq.m of gutters will be replaced. Drainage systems will also be improved, along with waterproofing and new seating arrangements.

New Waiting Hall

A new waiting hall for platforms 7 and 8 will be constructed at a cost of ₹45 lakh. This will add to the existing west-side waiting hall opened earlier in 2026.

Accessibility Features

To improve accessibility, two escalators will be installed on the east side foot overbridge. Platforms 5–6, 7–8, and 9–10 will be extended to facilitate lift installation.

Digital Passenger System

A modern digital system will be introduced with:

- Train arrival and departure displays
- 52 coach guidance boards
- 10 large digital screens
- Centralised announcement system with multilingual support

The system will use 70 outdoor speakers and 45 additional speakers across platforms and bridges. This digital upgrade is expected to be completed in 4 months.
