In a move to make destination weddings more affordable, the Tamil Nadu government has launched a new “Beach Wedding” initiative through the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC).
The scheme allows couples to organise their wedding ceremonies at scenic beach locations managed by the government at a much lower cost compared to private beach resorts.
Beach Weddings at Mamallapuram
The first venue introduced under this initiative is the Hotel Tamil Nadu Beach Resort at Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram). The resort has a private beachfront area that can now be used for wedding ceremonies, offering a beautiful seaside backdrop for couples.
Affordable Pricing
The government has kept the charges relatively affordable so that middle-class families can also enjoy destination-style weddings.
Approximate charges include:
Beach venue booking fee – around ₹10,000
Vegetarian catering – starting from ₹700 per person
Non-vegetarian catering – starting from ₹1,100 per person
Accommodation – rooms available for about ₹5,000 for a 22-hour stay
Flexible Arrangements
While the government provides the venue, catering, and accommodation facilities, families can arrange their own:
Stage setup
Decorations
Lighting arrangements
This gives couples the flexibility to customise their wedding celebrations according to their preferences.
Boost for Tourism
Officials believe the initiative will also help promote tourism and support the local economy. Wedding events can bring more visitors to coastal areas and increase demand for hotels, catering services, decorations, and event management businesses.
Beach Upgrades Planned
To further strengthen tourism infrastructure, the Tamil Nadu government is also working to upgrade several beaches such as Marina Beach, Kovalam, Nagapattinam and Ramanathapuram coastal areas to international Blue Flag standards.
The new beach wedding initiative is expected to provide couples with a memorable seaside wedding experience while keeping costs affordable.
