Tamil Nadu Weather Alert: Heavy to Very Heavy Rain in 7 Districts on October 20, Chennai Also on Alert

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in seven districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are also expected in several parts of the state.

Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Alert for 7 Districts

According to the weather department, isolated places in the following districts may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall:

- Pudukkottai

- Thanjavur

- Tiruvarur

- Nagapattinam

- Mayiladuthurai

- Cuddalore

- Villupuram

The same warning applies to Puducherry and Karaikal.

Heavy Rain Alert for Chennai and 15 Other Districts

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 40–50 kmph is likely in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruchy, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram.

Other parts of Tamil Nadu may experience moderate rainfall at a few places, along with thunderstorms and lightning.

The weather department attributed the rainfall conditions to an upper-air cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above sea level over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast. A trough also extends towards the northwest Bay of Bengal.

Tamil Nadu Rain Forecast for October 21

On Wednesday, October 21, heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts.

Heavy rain is also expected at isolated places in Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Madurai, Dindigul, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram, as well as Karaikal.

Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 40–50 kmph may accompany rainfall in affected areas. Other parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry may receive moderate rain at a few places.

Chennai Weather Forecast for October 20

Chennai and its suburbs are expected to have partly cloudy skies on Tuesday, with moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms likely in some areas.

The maximum temperature is expected to be around 32–33°C, while the minimum temperature may range between 25°C and 26°C.

Residents are advised to follow official weather updates, take precautions during thunderstorms and avoid exposed areas during lightning or strong winds.
