Chennai Metropolitan Area to Expand to 5,904 Sq Km

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has planned to expand the Chennai Metropolitan Area from the existing 1,189 sq km to 5,904 sq km. The expansion will include parts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts. As part of the plan, CMDA is taking steps to appoint an international consultant to design road infrastructure based on future requirements and improve tourism and public facilities along the coastal stretch from Pulicat to Mamallapuram.

The 20-year plan is being prepared as the existing 1,189 sq km area faces space constraints, making redevelopment the only viable option. The key objectives include planned urban development, flood-resilient infrastructure and wider roads. Urban planning experts have stressed the need to give priority to public transport and last-mile connectivity to reduce traffic congestion.

The preparation of the master plan is expected to take two years. The existing Third Master Plan will be reviewed within the next six months. CMDA has also confirmed that public feedback will be sought before the plan is finalised and notified.
