Several parts of Tamil Nadu, including the southern suburbs of the city, woke up to heavy rain in the early hours of Thursday (March 19), with around 7–9 cm recorded overnight. The sudden spell has brought a welcome break from the rising heat, and temperatures are expected to stay a bit lower through the day.

Weather blogger K Srikanth, known for his “Chennai Rains” updates, said parts of the state could see a third straight day of evening or night thunderstorms.

He mentioned that some areas in central Tamil Nadu, nearby Delta districts, and parts of the southern region may experience stronger thunderstorms, with a chance of hail in a few places.

For Chennai and its suburbs, he said there’s still a 50–50 chance of late-night rain, though it may be more scattered compared to Wednesday night. “From tomorrow, the thunderstorm activity should slowly ease, and the intense afternoon heat is likely to stay in check for the next couple of days,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning in isolated places such as Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, and the Karaikal region until 10 a.m. on Thursday.
