A signal failure at Retteri Junction has led to massive traffic congestion, disrupting vehicular movement across key arterial roads in north Chennai.
Retteri Junction connects several busy routes, including Inner Ring Road and areas such as Kolathur, Perambur and Madhavaram. The malfunctioning traffic signal, combined with ongoing infrastructure works, has worsened the already heavy traffic flow.
Peak Hour Traffic Paralysed
Motorists reported long vehicle queues stretching several hundred metres during morning and evening rush hours. With no proper signal regulation, vehicles from multiple directions entered the intersection simultaneously, resulting in gridlock.
Commuters travelling towards central Chennai and suburban areas experienced significant delays.
Metro Work Adds to the Problem
Ongoing metro rail construction near the junction has narrowed road space, limiting smooth traffic movement. The absence of a functioning signal further intensified the congestion.
Pedestrian Safety Concerns
The situation has also raised safety concerns for pedestrians, who are forced to cross busy roads amid uncontrolled traffic. Residents have urged authorities to restore signal operations and improve traffic management at the earliest.
Traffic police officials are reportedly monitoring the situation and taking temporary measures to ease congestion.
