Kancheepuram Traffic News: Major Roads Hit by Heavy Congestion

Severe traffic congestion affected several parts of Kancheepuram on October 2, 2026, as a shortage of traffic police personnel made it difficult to manage the holiday rush on major roads. The congestion was reported between 7 am and 1 pm on Gandhi Jayanti, causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians.

The long weekend and an increase in visitors from neighbouring districts added to the traffic volume. Kancheepuram, known as the City of Temples and the Silk City, attracts devotees, tourists and shoppers throughout the year.

Major Roads Affected by Traffic Congestion

The four Raja Veedhis, Kamarajar Street, Nellukara Street, Gandhi Road, Mettu Street and Salai Street are among the main roads experiencing heavy traffic in Kancheepuram.

Residents and social activists said the absence of a traffic police inspector for several months and inadequate staff deployment had contributed to the worsening situation. According to them, the town requires at least 24 traffic police personnel, but only seven are currently available.

Auto Parking Adds to Traffic Problems

Traffic congestion was particularly severe near the bus stand entrance on Kamarajar Road. Residents alleged that improperly parked auto-rickshaws, unregulated passenger pick-ups and vehicles parked along road margins were obstructing traffic and making pedestrian movement difficult.

People have urged the district administration to deploy additional traffic police personnel, remove road encroachments and introduce effective traffic management measures on busy stretches.

Kancheepuram City Police Upgrade Proposed

Police sources said that although Kancheepuram had been upgraded to a municipal corporation, its police administration continued to function under the Kancheepuram district police system.

Steps were reportedly being taken to upgrade the police administration to a city police commissionerate. Additional personnel and officers may be deployed following the proposed upgrade, according to police sources.
