Chennai to Get 11 High-Tech AC Bus Shelters Under CSR Initiative

For the first time, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will upgrade 11 bus shelters across the city into modern, air-conditioned facilities equipped with high-tech amenities.

As part of the pilot initiative, MoUs were signed on September 1 at Ripon Building in the presence of GCC Commissioner G S Sameeran, Police Commissioner A Amalraj and representatives of private companies. The Chennai AC bus shelters will be developed and maintained through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding, with the aim of improving commuter comfort, safety and accessibility.

Speaking about the initiative, Commissioner Sameeran said the pilot project is part of Chennai`s municipal infrastructure development programme, undertaken as per the directions of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.

“With the help of the Greater Chennai Police (GCP), high-footfall bus shelters have been identified. These facilities aim to provide better waiting facilities for the public who use these bus stops,” he said.

Seven companies will construct and maintain 11 high-tech bus shelters in Chennai using CSR funds at various locations across the city.

High-Tech Facilities at Chennai AC Bus Shelters

The new Chennai smart bus shelters will feature several modern amenities designed to improve the passenger experience. These include:

- Air-conditioned waiting rooms

- Heat-insulating ‘puff panel’ roofing

- Toughened and laminated safety glass

- CCTV surveillance

- Enhanced lighting facilities

- Free Wi-Fi access

- USB mobile charging ports

- Integrated bus route information displays

- Wheelchair-accessible ramps connected to the footpaths

The shelters will provide a safer and more comfortable waiting environment for commuters while also improving accessibility for passengers with mobility challenges.

Locations of the 11 High-Tech Bus Shelters

The 11 AC bus shelters in Chennai will be developed at several high-footfall locations, including:

- Apollo Hospital near DMS on Anna Salai

- Mylapore Bus Stop

- Kauvery Hospital on Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Vadapalani

- Guru Nanak College near Vijayanagar Bus Terminal in Velachery

- SIMS Hospital in Vadapalani

- Little Mount in Guindy near Roche Products India

- Alandur Metro and Future Station

- Egmore North

- p;Egmore South

These locations have been identified based on passenger footfall and the need for improved public transport infrastructure.

Companies to Maintain Chennai Bus Shelters for Three Years

A senior GCC official said that if the first phase of the Chennai AC bus shelter project proves successful, more air-conditioned shelters will be introduced at high-footfall locations through CSR partnerships.

The participating companies will be permitted to display only their own advertisements at the shelters. Each company will be responsible for maintaining its respective bus shelter for three years. The maintenance period may be extended based on the company`s performance.

The companies will also be required to pay and renew the applicable licence fee every year.

According to Commissioner Sameeran, the companies will undertake repair and maintenance work at the bus stops and provide security personnel.

Chennai Plans More Public Infrastructure Projects

The GCC is also working on constructing an AC bus shelter at Anna Square.

In addition, foot-over-bridges in busy areas are planned under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. These facilities are expected to include lifts and escalators to improve accessibility and convenience for commuters.

Each new bus shelter will have a seating capacity of around 45 people. The structure will measure approximately 9 metres in length and 5 metres in width, with a 6.24-metre waiting area and 1-metre advertisement panels on both sides. The front portion will include a 2.5-metre-wide ramp and steps.

It may be noted that three AC bus shelters in Chennai constructed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) are already located at Retteri Junction, Kalmandapam Road in Royapuram and Wall Tax Road.

The new high-tech AC bus shelters in Chennai are expected to mark a significant improvement in commuter facilities, with modern amenities focused on comfort, safety, accessibility and convenience.
