A modern multi-level parking facility has been inaugurated at Chennai Egmore Railway Station to improve passenger convenience and reduce traffic congestion around the station area.

Officials from the Chennai Railway Division stated that the new parking system is part of the massive ₹842 crore redevelopment project currently underway at the historic Egmore railway station. The redevelopment works began in February 2024 with a long-term vision to handle increasing passenger traffic and future railway operations over the next several decades.

As part of the first phase of the modernization project, several infrastructure upgrades including foot overbridges, platform expansion works, and roof renovation are progressing rapidly within the station premises.

The newly opened multi-level parking complex has been developed on the Gandhi-Irwin Road side of the station with advanced parking and passenger facilities.

According to railway officials:

- The 2nd and 3rd floors together can accommodate 122 four-wheelers and 68 two-wheelers.

- The 4th floor has parking space for 62 cars and 34 two-wheelers.

- The facility is designed to reduce roadside parking and improve traffic flow around the station.

The parking complex also includes 22 electric vehicle charging stations, 24-hour CCTV surveillance, fire safety systems, paid restrooms, driver rest areas, and smart locker facilities for passengers.

Railway authorities further revealed that another multi-level parking structure is being developed on the Poonamallee High Road side of the station. Once completed, the overall parking capacity at Chennai Egmore station is expected to increase significantly.

The modernization project is aimed at transforming Egmore into a world-class railway station with improved passenger amenities and better urban traffic management.
