New Low - Pressure Area Likely to Form in Bay of Bengal Tomorrow

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the possible formation of a new low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal on October 13, 2026. The development comes as Tamil Nadu awaits the onset of the northeast monsoon.

The IMD had earlier indicated that the northeast monsoon could begin in Tamil Nadu between October 15 and 20. After below-normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon, farmers and residents are hoping for adequate rainfall during the northeast monsoon season.

Northeast Monsoon Forecast for Tamil Nadu

Last year, the northeast monsoon began on October 16 and continued until the second week of January. Tamil Nadu recorded around 43 cm of rainfall overall during the season.

With concerns about the possible influence of El Nino, farmers are hoping that the northeast monsoon will bring sufficient rainfall this year.

Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain

An upper-air cyclonic circulation is currently prevailing over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining areas. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal on October 13, according to the IMD.

The department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from October 16 to 18, 2026.
