Omandurar Government Campus to Get New Public Plaza in Chennai

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated plans to transform the setback area of the Omandurar Government campus into a modern public plaza with recreational facilities, public amenities and civic gathering spaces.

The proposed Omandurar public plaza project aims to make better use of the available campus land while creating a high-quality open space for visitors, patient attendants and the general public.

Four Acres Planned for Public Recreational Space

According to sources, around four acres of the six-acre Omandurar campus could be developed into a public recreational area. The proposed facilities are expected to include landscaped spaces, seating arrangements, lighting and pedestrian footpaths.

The project may also feature an exhibition area, public viewing spaces, food counters and screening zones, providing visitors with a more comfortable and engaging public environment.

Project to Be Developed Under PPP Model

The Greater Chennai Corporation has invited consultants to provide project structuring and transaction advisory services for implementing the project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The appointed consultant will conduct detailed site investigations, field data collection and mapping of statutory requirements. The study will also examine utility shifting requirements, site conditions and other challenges that could affect project implementation.

Focus on Revenue Generation

The proposed public plaza will also focus on long-term financial sustainability. Consultants will review conceptual layouts, 3D visualisations and design guidelines to identify potential revenue-generating opportunities.

Revenue projections will consider factors such as space utilisation, advertising demand, tariffs, inflation and market trends. These assessments will help determine the project`s financial potential throughout the concession period.

Live Forum Space May Be Revived

Another major proposal is the revival of the live forum space originally constructed when the Omandurar campus was being considered for the Secretariat. The space could become an important venue for public events, exhibitions and civic activities.

The proposed Omandurar Government campus redevelopment is expected to create a new public destination in central Chennai while improving the utilisation of the existing setback area.

The project, if implemented as planned, could add a much-needed recreational and civic gathering space in Chennai and provide residents and visitors with improved public amenities.
