PM Modi Likely to Inaugurate Poonamallee - Vadapalani Metro Phase 2 on October 11

Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2 is set to reach a major milestone, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to inaugurate the 14.6-km Poonamallee–Vadapalani metro stretch on October 11, 2026.

The proposed inauguration is expected to mark the opening of one of the first operational sections of the 118.9-km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project. The new corridor will improve connectivity between Poonamallee, Porur and Vadapalani, benefiting thousands of daily commuters.

PM Modi May Take Metro Ride from Poonamallee to Porur

As part of the proposed programme, Prime Minister Modi is expected to take a Metro train ride from Poonamallee to Porur. His proposed visit may also include IIT Madras and a public event where several development projects could be inaugurated.

The final itinerary and programme schedule are yet to be officially announced.

Poonamallee–Vadapalani Metro Stretch

The Poonamallee–Vadapalani Metro corridor is part of Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro Phase 2. The operational stretch covers around 14.6 km and will provide an important connection between western Chennai and the existing Metro network at Vadapalani.

The corridor passes through important residential and commercial areas, including Poonamallee, Kumananchavadi, Iyyappanthangal, Porur, Alapakkam and Valasaravakkam.

Metro Services to Run Every 10 Minutes

Initially, Chennai Metro services on the new stretch are expected to operate at approximately 10-minute intervals. Around 15 Metro trains are likely to be deployed for passenger services.

The introduction of the new Metro service is expected to provide commuters with an alternative to road transport and help improve connectivity along the busy Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani route.

Chennai Metro Phase 2 Progress

The Chennai Metro Phase 2 project covers 118.9 km with 128 stations across three corridors. The project is aimed at expanding Chennai`s rapid transit network and connecting several major residential, commercial and industrial areas.

The Poonamallee–Vadapalani section had been awaiting the required safety clearance. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) gave the final approval for the 14.6-km stretch in May 2026.

The proposed October 11 inauguration is therefore expected to be an important step towards bringing Chennai Metro Phase 2 services into regular passenger operation.
