Cooking oil prices have increased sharply in Chennai following global tensions caused by the Iran–Israel conflict involving the Iran, United States, and Israel.

According to wholesale traders, the prices of several edible oils have surged in the past two weeks due to the unstable international situation. Traders say the war-like situation has affected import costs and market supply, leading to a rise in retail prices.

The price of sunflower oil, widely used in households, has increased from ₹155 per litre to ₹170 in wholesale markets, while in retail shops it is being sold for around ₹175 per litre.

Similarly, palm oil which was priced at around ₹110 per litre two weeks ago, is now being sold for about ₹122 per litre in wholesale markets. In retail stores, the price has increased by an additional ₹5 to ₹6 per litre.

Overall, the price of sunflower oil and palm oil has risen by ₹10 to ₹15 per litre in the last two weeks. Other oils such as sesame oil, coconut oil, and groundnut oil have also seen price increases of about ₹2 to ₹4 per litre.

Traders say the continued global tensions may keep prices unstable in the coming weeks, affecting household budgets and the retail food market.
