Gone are the days when the MBBS students in TN preferred non clinical subjects like anatomy, pharmacology, biochemistry and forensic medicine etc in their post graduation studies!!

Times have changed and the students now who have completed MBBS are not having any interest to pursue post graduate studies in non-clinical subjects etc. This has now become a huge cause for concern. It must be taken into account that the cut-off percentile in the above said subjects were reduced this year to make sure that the seats do not go vacant.

Point is that in 2023 the cut-offs were reduced to zero in all categories. The cut-offs percentile was reduced from 50 to 15 for the candidates to be eligible for counselling in the EWS or general category. Likewise, the cut-off percentile was reduced from 40 to 10 for those belonging to SC or ST or OBC categories.  The cut-offs were reduced to zero to help even the last rank students to get admissions in the PG courses.

The lack of non takers for the non-clinical courses has shocked the experts in the medical education system now. According to Dr. Iniyan Xavier, cardiology resident at GH in Chennai, the candidates don`t prefer subjects like anatomy, pharmacology, biochemistry and forensic medicine etc as they would lead to non-clinical jobs.

He threw light on how these non-clinical subjects would force a doctor to do desk type work and how many doctors don`t like that. He added that candidates prefer only clinical subjects as it would be more fast paced and exciting etc.

It is learnt that many students prefer to study non-clinical subjects in their post graduation only from highly recognised medical colleges like JIPMER, AIIMS etc but not in the government medical colleges in TN. The reason for that is the method of teaching in these top class medical colleges and job opportunities
