WhatsApp Introduces New Security Features, Supports Stronger Passwords

WhatsApp has announced a series of new security updates aimed at strengthening account protection, expanding authentication options, and helping users identify unwanted calls.

WhatsApp has confirmed that more than one billion users now use passkeys for authentication. As part of its latest security improvements, the platform is introducing additional features to make account access safer and more convenient.

Passkey Support Across Multiple Devices

Passkeys allow users to sign in using biometric authentication, such as a fingerprint or facial recognition, or their device`s screen lock. This reduces the need for SMS verification codes.

With the latest update, WhatsApp allows users to add multiple passkeys to the same account. This is particularly useful for people who use different devices and operating systems, including iOS and Android, while maintaining secure biometric access.

Users can manage this feature through Settings > Account > Passkeys.

Enhanced Two-Step Verification

WhatsApp has also updated its two-step verification system. Previously, users could secure their accounts only with a six-digit numerical PIN. The updated system now supports alphanumeric passwords with special characters, providing users with a stronger authentication option.

More Information for Calls from Unknown Numbers

WhatsApp is also introducing additional context for calls from unsaved contacts on Android devices. This feature is designed to help users identify potentially unwanted or fraudulent calls before answering them.

When a call comes from an unknown number, WhatsApp can display:

- The country code or origin of the phone number

- Any common groups shared by the caller and recipient

These details give users more information before answering an unfamiliar call, helping them assess whether it is legitimate and identify potential scam attempts.
