Tamil Nadu Government Plans to Expand CMCHIS Coverage to Include More Medical Procedures

The Tamil Nadu government is considering expanding the scope of the Chief Minister`s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) to cover a wider range of medical procedures, Health Minister K.G. Arunraj announced on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference on the functioning of State-run medical facilities, the minister said the government is actively discussing ways to broaden the scheme`s coverage, which already meets most of the healthcare needs of eligible beneficiaries.

"The Chief Minister`s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) covers most of the medical needs of the people. We are now discussing whether its scope can be expanded further. A positive decision will be taken soon," the minister said.

Expanded Coverage Under CMCHIS

The proposed expansion is expected to include additional medical procedures under the CM Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, enabling more beneficiaries to access quality healthcare without facing significant financial burdens.

CMCHIS is one of Tamil Nadu`s flagship healthcare initiatives, providing cashless treatment for a wide range of medical conditions at government hospitals and empanelled private hospitals across the State.

Government Responds to Treatment Access Concerns

Responding to reports that some patients face difficulties accessing treatments covered under the insurance scheme in government hospitals, the Health Minister said the issue is largely due to a lack of public awareness.

He urged eligible beneficiaries to familiarise themselves with the services available under CMCHIS and assured that the government is taking steps to improve awareness and streamline access to healthcare services.

Infrastructure Upgrades in Government Hospitals

Addressing complaints related to poor sanitation, drainage issues, and pest infestations in government hospital wards, the minister said the State government has initiated phased infrastructure upgrades across its healthcare facilities.

As part of the immediate measures, new bed linens are being distributed to government hospitals to improve hygiene and enhance patient comfort. Additional improvements will be implemented in phases to provide cleaner and more efficient healthcare facilities.

Zero Tolerance Towards Corruption

Reiterating the government`s zero-tolerance policy against corruption, the minister warned hospital staff against demanding or accepting money from patients for services provided under government healthcare schemes.

Referring to the recent dismissal of four employees at KMC, he said the government would continue to take strict disciplinary action against anyone found engaging in corrupt practices.
