Cash Payments to Be Stopped at National Highway Toll Plazas from April 1 | FASTag & UPI Only

Posted on: 21/Feb/2026 10:12:57 AM

In a major policy shift, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is reportedly planning to discontinue cash payments at toll plazas across national highways. From April 1, commuters may be required to pay toll charges only through digital modes such as FASTag and UPI.

The move is aimed at promoting seamless digital transactions, reducing congestion at toll gates, and improving operational efficiency on highways across India.

Digital-Only Toll Payment System

Currently, motorists can pay toll fees using cash or FASTag. However, under the proposed system, cash transactions will be completely stopped, making digital payments mandatory at all national highway toll plazas.

Accepted Payment Modes (From April 1 – Expected)

- FASTag (RFID-based electronic toll collection system)

- UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and other digital platforms

This transition is expected to support India’s digital payment ecosystem and strengthen transparency in toll collection.
