Would you believe that the price of an egg has gone down below Rs 4 per piece now? Yes it`s true!!

The poultry sector in Namakkal in TN has been affected because of the bird flu outbreak in Hyderabad. It is well known that Namakkal is the poultry hub of Tamil Nadu.

Amidst the stagnation of the huge volume of eggs in Hyderabad, the demand for eggs has plunged to its lowest now. The sensational piece of information is that this is the first time in the last 3 years the price of eggs has gone down below Rs 4 per piece that is Rs 3.80 per piece to be exact.

The fall in the eggs prices has been responsible for average daily loss up to Rs 7cr in the poultry units belonging to Namakkal in TN. This was mentioned by Mr. Vangili Subramaniam, president of TN Egg Poultry Farmers Marketing Society.

In the last 5 days, the egg procurement rates have fallen down by Rs 1.10paise. As a result, the poultry sector is facing a huge challenge now. On Monday, NECC or National Egg Coordination Committee in the Namakkal zone fixed egg prices at Rs 3.80 per egg.

The poultry farmers have been asked by NECC to sell eggs at price fixed by NECC depending on the demand and supply and not to sell at lower prices. Truth is that the farmers have been selling eggs up to 50paise less than the price fixed by NECC. The poultry farmers now have cut down the egg production by 10percent as they were unable to meet the surging loss.

It is known that the 1000 plus poultry farms in Namakkal district produce 6cr eggs every day. Not only the eggs are consumed by the people belonging to TN, Kerala, Karnataka and northern states etc but also the eggs get exported every month.

The strict adherence to the bio-security measures would prevent the bird flu from spreading to Namakkal and the poultry farmers are confident about this now.

As per poultry farmer in Namakkal bird flu outbreak has been reported from several parts in India but the containment measures undertaken by the poultry units in Namakkal have ensured Namakkal to be free from the bird flu infection. The egg prices might rebound in northern states as the Kumbhmela has come to an end. Point is that eggs consumption decreased in northern states due to Kumbhmela.
