Tamil Nadu’s Vehicle Population Crosses 4 Crore, Driven by Surge in Two-Wheelers and Cars

Tamil Nadu’s vehicle population has crossed four crore, with a sharp increase in personal vehicles, particularly two-wheelers and cars, driving the growth. At the same time, the number of public transport stage carriages has remained largely stagnant, according to official data.

In less than two decades, Tamil Nadu’s total vehicle population has more than quadrupled. The state recorded 4.057 crore vehicles in 2026-27 up to June, compared with 3.992 crore in 2025-26 and 1.007 crore in 2007-08.

The state took around seven years to increase its vehicle population from one crore to two crore. It crossed three crore vehicles after another six years and reached the four-crore mark roughly six years later.

Two-Wheelers Account for More Than 83% of Vehicles

The composition of Tamil Nadu’s vehicle population has changed significantly over the years. Two-wheelers alone account for 3.38 crore vehicles, representing more than 83% of the state’s total vehicles.

The number of two-wheelers increased from 82.6 lakh in 2007-08 to 3.38 crore in 2026-27, marking more than a four-fold increase.

Cars have also emerged as a major contributor to the growth in personal vehicles. The number of motor cars increased from 8.3 lakh in 2007-08 to 42.2 lakh in 2026-27, representing more than a five-fold rise.

Together, two-wheelers and cars account for nearly 94% of Tamil Nadu’s total vehicle population.

Vehicle Growth Accelerates Over the Past Decade

The increase has been particularly significant over the past decade. Tamil Nadu’s total vehicle population rose from 2.04 crore in 2014-15 to 3.76 crore in 2024-25, before crossing four crore in 2026-27.

During the same period, the number of two-wheelers increased from 1.70 crore to 3.16 crore, while motor cars rose from 18.2 lakh to 38.4 lakh.

Public Transport Growth Remains Limited

In contrast, the growth in public transport has been modest. Tamil Nadu had 31,148 stage carriages in 2024-25, compared with 24,879 in 2007-08.

This represents an increase of around 25% over nearly two decades, significantly lower than the growth recorded in personal vehicles.

The number of stage carriages has actually declined since 2014-15, when the state had 34,381. Public-sector stage carriages fell from 22,474 in 2014-15 to 20,527 in 2024-25, while private stage carriages remained broadly within the 7,000–8,000 range.

Expert Calls for Stronger Public Transport

Retired Anna University urban engngineering professor KP Subramanian said the Tamil Nadu government should make a determined effort to strengthen public transport and reduce the rapid growth of personal vehicles, particularly two-wheelers.

“Public transport should be promoted by increasing its frequency and integrating it with other modes of transport. There is also a need for fair integration. Footpaths and cycle tracks should be provided to connect public transport stations,” he said.

Subramanian noted that personal transport provides greater comfort but highlighted safety concerns, particularly for two-wheeler users, whom he described as being among the most vulnerable road users.
