Chennai - Howrah Among 7 Railway Routes Planned for Four-Track Expansion

The Indian Railways has planned to expand seven of the country’s busiest high-density railway routes into four-track corridors, including the Chennai–Howrah (Kolkata) railway route. The project aims to increase train operating capacity, reduce travel time and improve the movement of passenger and freight trains.

The Railway Ministry is undertaking several projects to strengthen railway infrastructure in India, including track upgrades and improvements to facilities at railway stations.

As part of this initiative, around 11,000 km of high-density railway network is planned to be converted into four-track corridors. The expansion is expected to ensure smoother and more efficient movement of passenger trains and freight trains.

7 Railway Routes Planned for Four-Track Expansion

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the seven identified routes together cover around 11,000 km, accounting for approximately 16% of the total Indian Railways network. However, these routes handle around 41% of the country`s overall railway traffic.

The seven railway corridors planned for four-track expansion are:

Chennai–Howrah (Kolkata)

Chennai–Mumbai

Delhi–Chennai

Delhi–Howrah

Mumbai–Delhi

Mumbai–Howrah

Delhi–Guwahati

Three of these major railway corridors are connected to Chennai, highlighting the city`s importance in India`s railway network.

Chennai Railway Connectivity to Improve

The proposed expansion of the Chennai–Howrah railway route, along with the Chennai–Mumbai and Delhi–Chennai corridors, is expected to improve railway connectivity between Chennai and other major cities.

The addition of new railway tracks will help reduce congestion and ease pressure on the existing network. It is also expected to improve the efficiency of train operations and reduce waiting time caused by busy railway corridors.

More Vande Bharat and Express Trains Possible

According to railway officials, additional tracks will allow trains to operate more smoothly, with fewer delays caused by congestion and signal-related waiting.

At present, limited track capacity on busy routes makes it difficult to introduce additional train services. Once the four-track railway expansion is completed, the Railways will have greater scope to operate additional Vande Bharat trains, express trains and other p passenger services.

The project is also expected to improve the movement of freight trains and reduce the pressure on existing railway lines.

The four-track railway expansion is expected to strengthen India`s freight transportation network. Railways provide a cost-effective option for transporting goods, and increased track capacity could support faster and more efficient freight movement.

Officials said the expansion is being undertaken to meet the expected rise in passenger and freight traffic in the coming years.
