Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Temple, Triplicane - History and Significance

The Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Temple, located in Triplicane (Thiruvallikeni), Chennai, is one of the most revered 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Revered as Brindaranya Kshetram in ancient scriptures, the temple is believed to have originated during the Pallava period and has undergone several renovations by successive dynasties over the centuries. Today, it stands as one of Chennai`s most important spiritual and historical landmarks.

According to the Brahmanda Purana, King Sumathi desired to have the divine darshan of Lord Krishna in the form of Parthasarathy, the charioteer of Arjuna during the Mahabharata war. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before him at Brindaranya Kshetram. It is also believed that Sage Athreya, under the guidance of Sage Vedavyasa, installed the idol of Lord Krishna at this sacred site and began worship according to the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition.

The presiding deity, Sri Venkata Krishnaswamy, is worshipped along with Rukmini Thayar, Balarama, Satyaki, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha, collectively known as the Pancha Veeras. The festival deity, Sri Parthasarathy Swamy, is unique because His face bears marks believed to represent the wounds inflicted by Bhishma`s arrows during the Kurukshetra war, symbolising His divine role as Arjuna`s charioteer.

The temple has been glorified in the hymns of Pey Alwar, Thirumazhisai Alwar, and Thirumangai Alwar, making it one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres for Vaishnavites. Historical inscriptions indicate that the temple flourished during the Pallava and Vijayanagara periods, when several mandapams and architectural additions were constructed.

The temple complex features a majestic five-tier Rajagopuram, the sacred Kairavini Pushkarini temple tank, and separate shrines dedicated to Sri Vedavalli Thayar, Sri Ranganatha (Mannatha Swamy), Sri Rama, Yoga Narasimha, Gajendra Varadar, Andal, Hanuman, and several revered Sri Vaishnava Acharyas. Major festivals such as Brahmotsavam, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Panguni Uthiram, Theppotsavam, and Navaratri are celebrated with great devotion, attracting thousands of devotees every year.
