Tamil Nadu has witnessed a strong response to engineering admissions this year, with nearly three lakh students registering for the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 process. However, the counselling schedule is yet to receive approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

According to officials from the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), under the Higher Education Department, a total of 2,95,080 students had registered for engineering admissions as of June 3.

TNEA 2026 is being conducted entirely through an online process, covering registration, application fee payment, certificate verification, choice filling, seat allotment, and admission confirmation.

Officials expect the number of applicants to cross the three lakh mark before the registration deadline on June 5, 2026. The increase in registrations is attributed in part to the postponement of NEET and the growing preference among students for engineering and technology courses.

Sources in the Directorate of Technical Education indicated that the counselling process is likely to begin in the second week of July, although the final schedule is awaiting AICTE approval. Authorities are aiming to complete admissions on time so that first-year engineering students can commence classes from September 2026.

Engineering admissions in Tamil Nadu are conducted solely on the basis of Class 12 board examination marks, with no separate entrance examination required for admission to engineering colleges under the TNEA process.

The large number of registrations highlights the continued demand for engineering education in Tamil Nadu and reflects the importance of TNEA as one of the largest centralized engineering admission processes in the country.
