The MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) extension between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount will begin operations from Saturday (March 14), according to an announcement by the Chennai Railway Division.

This new extension is part of the second phase of the Chennai MRTS project, connecting Velachery directly with St. Thomas Mount. The construction of the extended railway track has recently been completed, and after multiple stages of testing, the Commissioner of Railway Safety has issued a temporary authorization certificate to begin train operations.

During the safety inspection, officials advised the removal of certain supporting structures located above the Chennai Metro Rail Limited infrastructure. The metro authorities requested 24 hours to complete the work, after which train services on the new route will begin.

Train Services on the Route

A total of 96 electric train services will operate on this corridor:

- 86 trains between Chennai Beach and St. Thomas Mount (both directions)

- 4 trains between Chennai Beach and Velachery

- 6 trains between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount

This extension will provide direct connectivity along the MRTS corridor, ensuring smoother and uninterrupted travel for daily commuters.

Importantly, St. Thomas Mount station will become a major integrated transport hub, connecting three key transport systems: MRTS suburban rail, suburban railway network, and the Chennai Metro. This is expected to significantly improve public transportation connectivity across the city.
