Kalaignar Centenary Climate Park Becomes Green Lung of South Chennai
Kalaignar Centenary Climate Park near Kilambakkam, inaugurated in December 2024, is emerging as a major green landmark in South Chennai. Built using nature-based solutions and sponge city concepts, the park is designed to manage nearly 90% of rainwater within its campus, helping reduce flooding and improve groundwater recharge.
Developed on restored land, the park also plays a crucial role in lowering surrounding temperatures by up to 12°C, offering relief from urban heat. Featuring four distinct biomes - tropical forest, grasslands with ponds, hills and coastal ecosystems -the project promotes biodiversity, climate awareness and sustainable urban development. Officials describe it as a model for climate-resilient infrastructure in the city.
