CMRL Initiates Feasibility Study for Semi-High-Speed Rail Corridors in Tamil Nadu

Posted on: 02/Aug/2025 9:47:55 AM

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has commenced detailed feasibility studies for establishing semi-high-speed rail corridors in Tamil Nadu, targeting faster intercity connectivity between key regions including Chennai and Coimbatore.

Proposed Corridors:

1. Chennai – Chengalpattu – Tindivanam – Villupuram (167 km)
2. Chennai – Kanchipuram – Vellore (140 km)
3. Coimbatore – Tiruppur – Erode – Salem (185 km)

These rail lines are expected to operate at 160–200 km/h, offering a faster and more efficient alternative to road travel. The initiative is inspired by India’s Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) model and aims to ease traffic congestion while connecting suburban regions to major cities.

Project Highlights:

- Consultants appointed by CMRL are currently studying:

- Route alignments

- Station and depot locations

- Integration with existing metro and rail networks

Goal: To improve regional mobility, reduce travel times, and enhance the daily commute for thousands of passengers.

This project is part of a larger transport infrastructure upgrade, which includes metro rail extensions and mass rapid transit system (MRTS) enhancements across Tamil Nadu.

With these developments, CMRL is set to play a pivotal role in transforming the state’s public transportation landscape bringing faster, safer, and smarter rail travel to the people of Tamil Nadu.
