Super El Nino Reaches New High as Nino 3.4 Sea Temperature Crosses 30°C

The Super El Nino event is continuing to intensify globally, with the sea surface temperature in the Nino 3.4 region crossing 30°C for the first time, according to Delta Weatherman. The development has raised expectations about whether the impact of El Nino could become stronger in the coming months.

Nino 3.4 Sea Temperature Crosses 30°C

According to NOAA OISST V2.1 data, the sea surface temperature in the Nino 3.4 region was initially recorded at 30.06°C on October 5, 2026. Delta Weatherman said this is the first time the region has crossed 30°C in daily records dating back to 1981. The previous highest temperature was 29.82°C, recorded on November 17, 2015. Recent reports also confirm that the Nino 3.4 region reached 30.06°C on October 5 based on NOAA OISST data.

Sea Temperature Continues to Rise

Compared with the average temperature between 1991 and 2020, the Nino 3.4 region is currently around 3.41°C warmer. At the beginning of October, the normal average temperature in this region was around 26.6°C to 26.7°C, making the current reading significantly higher.

It has also been reported that temperature levels recorded in 2026 are higher than those observed during previous years, including 1876, 1982, 1997 and 2015. As El Nino moves towards its usual peak period, sea temperatures are also continuing to rise.

Super El Nino Could Strengthen Further

Another westward wind burst and twin cyclone activity over the western Pacific could cause large amounts of warm water to move eastward. As a result, the Nino 3.4 temperature anomaly could rise towards +4.0°C over the next few weeks.

The weakening of trade winds, eastward movement of convection and continued eastward movement of heat through Kelvin waves are among the factors contributing to the continued strengthening of the El Nino connection between the ocean and atmosphere. NOAA has also reported that El Nino is strengthening, with above-average sea surface temperatures and atmospheric changes supporting the developing event.

Super El Nino May Continue Into 2027

The Super El Niño is reportedly yet to reach its peak. While December 2026 is expected to mark its peak, intense Super El Nino conditions could continue until April 2027.

If the Nino 3.4 region continues to record a temperature anomaly of +4.0°C, it would represent a level not previously seen in the instrumental historical record, according to the report.

Northeast Monsoon in Tamil Nadu

The Northeast Monsoon is expected to begin in Tamil Nadu in the coming days. Heavy rainfall is expected across the state from October 15 to December 20, according to the report. Delta Weatherman has also been advising people and farmers to conserve rainwater to help manage the possible impact of the El Nino conditions that could continue into next year.
