Tamil Nadu Transport Department Launches ₹10 Purified Drinking Water for Long-Distance Bus Passengers

The Tamil Nadu Transport Department has launched a new ₹10 purified drinking water scheme for passengers travelling on long-distance buses operated by the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC).

Transport Minister A. Vijay Tamilan Parthiban launched the scheme in Chennai. Under the new initiative, passengers travelling on long-distance SETC buses can purchase a one-litre bottle of purified drinking water for ₹10.

Tamil Nadu`s State Express Transport Corporation operates more than 1,080 express and air-conditioned buses, serving over one lakh passengers every day. The new initiative aims to make safe and affordable drinking water easily available to passengers during long-distance journeys.

₹10 Drinking Water Scheme for Bus Passengers

A similar initiative was earlier introduced in 2013 under the ‘Amma Kudineer’ scheme, through which one-litre drinking water bottles were sold for ₹10 at major bus terminals.

However, the scheme was later discontinued in 2021 due to technical issues and production-related problems at the government drinking water production facility in Gummidipoondi.

The newly introduced ‘Payani’ purified drinking water scheme has now been launched to meet the drinking water needs of passengers travelling on long-distance government buses.

Initially, the scheme will be implemented on SETC long-distance buses. Officials said the initiative could be expanded further depending on the response from passengers.

The move is expected to provide affordable and easily accessible drinking water to thousands of passengers travelling across Tamil Nadu.
